LWVAL Council 2018 Livestreamed Events are Online!

Did you miss LWVAL Council 2018 livestreamed events on Saturday, April 14? It all happened right here in Birmingham, AL at the BJCTA. If you missed it, not to worry! Archived videos of guest speaker former U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance, the State of the State panel, and the Alabama Public Transportation panel are available @LWVAL on Facebook.

MANY THANKS!

…to the many LWVGB volunteers who made League of Women Voters of Alabama Council 2018 possible! We were happy to be the host organization but it would not have been possible without the many helping hands of LWVGB members. And a special thanks to the administration and staff of the Birmingham-Jefferson-County Transit Authority for providing your beautiful Administration Offices building for the event!

LWVAL will soon post photos of the event, but don't miss those videos streamed on Facebook!

"Gerrymandered Voting Districts:
Shapes that Control Democracy"

A presentation and public discussion led by
Attorney Edward Still

Still_2005_cropped
Gerrymandering of voting districts is a powerful tool capable of weakening and even silencing your vote. On Monday, March 12, 2018 at the Avondale Public Library, 509 40th Street South in Birmingham, the public and members and friends of host organizations the League of Women Voters of Greater Birmingham, Alpha Kappa Alpha - Upsilon Eta Omega Chapter, and the Magic City Bar Association learned about gerrymanders - what they are, how they are created, cases before the Supreme Court, and the power these manipulated districts have over our vote. Thank you, Birmingham Attorney Ed Still or educating us on this topic and answering our questions.

Mr. Still is a nationally recognized expert on voting rights, election reform, gerrymandering, and rights of employees who serve in the military. He graduated from the University of Alabama and the UA law school. He has lectured on voting rights litigation and election methods at Georgetown University, University of Virginia, and Washington and Lee, among others. In addition he has been a panelist at regional, national, and international political science meetings and has published a number of scholarly articles. In his community service Mr. Still founded and served as chair of the Center for Voting and Democracy, a Washington-based educational group providing information about alternative election systems, such as preference voting, limited voting, cumulative voting, and party list voting (proportional representation). He served on the board of the Center until 2003. It is now FairVote.org. Every Vote Counts

Voting does matter. Period. Whether or not your candidate won the Alabama U.S. Senate Special Election, that is evident. Turnout on December 12 was about 40%. Was your vote a part of that statistic? If so, congratulations! Keep your sleeves rolled up. If not, be prepared to participate next time so that you, too, can write history and right history. VOTE and you will set the course for your community, your state and your nation!

IT'S UP TO YOU!

VOTE TODAY
TO CHOOSE ALABAMA'S NEXT
U. S. SENATOR!

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2017,
7 A.M. - 7 P.M.

4 THINGS TO KNOW

1.)  Find out where you should go to vote. Find your polling place at  https://myinfo.alabamavotes.gov/VoterView/PollingPlaceSearch.do
If you do not get the information you need, call your county Board of Registrars at http://sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes/board-of-registrars-all-counties
NOTE: If you go to this page
https://myinfo.alabamavotes.gov/VoterView/RegistrantSearch.do
listed by the Secretary of State to find out if you are registered to vote and where your polling place is, you may not get proper results if you enter information that does not exactly match your voter registration record or if you have not voted in many years. If you have a problem it is better to call your county Board of Registrars.

2.)  Take acceptable photo voter ID to your polling place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. and VOTE! What's acceptable photo voter ID? See the list at
http://sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes/voter/voter-id

3.)  You can vote for anyone you like. You can vote for one of the candidates on the ballot, or you can write-in a person of your choice. How you voted previously or even whether or not you voted before does not matter.

4.)  You cannot be denied the right to vote. If your name is not on the polling list or you do not have acceptable photo ID, say that you want to vote a
provisional ballot. Try your best to vote a regular ballot. (If you have moved to another Alabama county since you registered, you may need to go back to the polling place where your name is on the polling list.) If you must vote a provisional ballot, you will have until Friday, Dec. 15, to present proof at the county court house (perhaps acceptable photo ID?) that your vote should count.

Questions?
