LWVGB Projects and
Member Participation Opportunities
2008-2009

(See volunteer opportunities below in bold blue.)

The following are projects for which LWVGB welcomes member involvement in 2008-2009.  All of the projects have a board member who will explain or assist.  For a number of the tasks we have materials available that may be used or updated/revised.  For any task, questions are welcomed.  The Board is happy to assist members who have questions.

Area/Coordinator

Advocacy/VRandolph

Letter writing to our State legislators           1-2 volunteers

            Time:  1 hour as needed for about 5-10 times during Jan. – March

            Expectation:  using LWVAL information, write electronic letter and forward to President who is the only person who may represent LWVGB

            May also write letters representing self (no League identity) and do not need to forward to President

Letter writing to Congress     VRandolph

Letters to editor of newspaper/op ed          VRandolph & 1 volunteer

Coordinate County Manager Bill for Jefferson County     3-4 volunteers

            Time:  total unknown, start in October and complete by March

            Expectations:            contact Paul DeMarco to discuss strategy, develop plans (which may include public forum), educate the LWVGB Board, write editorials, write articles for Vote

Voters’ Service/KThrelkeld

Work at the Registrar's Office late September – November 4      as many volunteers as possible

            Time:  2-4 hours weekdays 9-5

            Expectations:            answer telephones.  Look up information on computer.  You will receive just in time training.

Voters' Service/KThrelkeld

Produce stickers for Voters Service         1-2 volunteers

            Time:  2-4 hours August – early September

            Expectations:            design and print stickers "I registered to Vote with LWV" and give to Voters Service

Former Felon Voting Rights          CArnwine, CSaint Lewis & 0-2 volunteers or more as needed

            Time:  depends on decisions for actions and number of volunteers

            Expectations:  decide actions to take during the year and implement with Board approval

Register college students to vote AMcGriff & 2-4 volunteers to organize

            Time:  total of about 4 hours August

            Expectations:            contact colleges, design table and materials (much available) and set up schedule, get materials to volunteers, collect data to determine effectiveness

 

Work at registering college students       4-12 volunteers

            Time:  2-4 hours each August

            Expectations:            staff registration table, "sell LWV", check registration forms for completeness, share information on absentee ballot application, take forms to the County Registrar within 24 hours and count number of forms completed

   Currently Scheduled College Voter Registrations
  • UAB Homecoming Game, Legion Field - Sat., October 18, 10 am - 12:20 pm (UAB School of Health Professionals will have 3 volunteers. Need 1-2 League volunteers to assist.
  • Virginia College, Palisades Campus - Mon., Oct. 6, 9 am - 12 pm - 2 volunteers
  • Virginia College, Bagby Drive Campus - Tues., Oct. 7, 2 pm - 5 pm - 2 volunteers

 

Work at registering individuals as requested or determined  volunteers as able when called

            Time:  2-4 hours each  September – October 20

            Expectations:            pick up materials, set up table, assist citizen in completion of registration form, take registration forms to County Registrar within 24 hours, count number of forms completed.

Email to Real Estate Association and other groups regarding registering to vote, changing of address for voting     1 volunteer

            Time:  3 hours

            Expectations:            develop email (approval of Voters' Service chair), develop list of groups for email, send email and copy Voters' Service chair and President

              

Write PSA's for radio, community newspapers and ads for college newspapers   VRandolph & SMelonas

            Time:  2 hours, needs to be completed before September 15th

            Expectations:            write the PSA's (templates that need local personalization are available) and ads, get approval through the President, obtain contacts at colleges, send PSA's to stations (we have a list) and send ads to college newspapers for publication in September (in time to register)

              

Update Fingertips    YBrakefield & 1 volunteer

            Time:  About 6 hours if just updating and leaving format the same; about 20 hours if format is changed. Complete by end of December

            Expectations:  verify information for newly elected, make necessary changes to Alabama Government at Your Fingertips, print 100 copies, post copy on Web site.  Note, if the recommendation is to do a slick copy, let Board know to obtain funding.


Web/JJohnson

Help with web site:  2 volunteers

            Time:  1-2 hours per week or 4-6 hours per month for about 4 months

            Expectations:            work with Jean Johnson to remove out-of-date information, reformat information as needed, post new information, develop on-line capability for donations

              Fundraising/VRandolph   

Fundraising for Ed Fund    1-2 volunteers

            Time:  4 hours but may be split as wish during August and September

            Expectations:            plan with committee strategy, write letters, print and mail, collect data to evaluate effectiveness

 

Women's Equality Day Fund Raiser        AMcGriff & 2 volunteers

            Time:  4 hours to plan, 2 hours to produce cards, 2 hours to address cards


              Meetings Arrangements/CBennett

Meeting arrangements                   2-3 volunteers 

            Time:  3-4 hours, depending on plans

            Expectations:            plan needs for the year, contact venues, determine if need decorations or handouts for at least the Holiday Luncheon.

Work with AAUW to Celebrate Women's history month           2-3 volunteers

            Time:  depends on what is planned

            Expectations:            contact AAUW and work with them on plan(s), communicate with board, execute plan

 
               Natural Resources/JLanning

Review of Natural Resources Position   JLanning & 1-2 volunteers

            Time:  3-4 hours

            Expectations:            review the position for timeliness, broad scope and make suggestions for any revisions

 

Climate Change Issues      JLanning 2-3 volunteers

            Time:  depends on activities tackled.  Suggestions include at least articles for the Voter, letters to the editor or op ed pieces for the Birmingham News and other newspapers

            Expectations:  determine interest in activities or advocacy and implement with Board approval.

              

               Membership/NEkberg & AMcGriff

Membership 2-3 volunteers 

            Time:  3-5 hours per month

            Expectations:  contact members to encourage them to participate in projects, set up quarterly lunch or dinner meetings to discuss concerns members have, plan membership recruitment activities

 

Mothers, Daughters and Sisters Project 2 volunteers

            Time:  Variable but finite

            Expectations:            work with membership committee, develop strategy to recruit members, complete the project and collect data to evaluate effectiveness

 

              Budget/McDonald

Monitor budget, pay bills, report to Board monthly

Prepare budget for 2009-2010 SMcDonald, VRandolph & AMcGriff

Budget Audits:          2004-2006 KErdreich-Breman 2007-2009 AMcGriff

            Time: 2-4 hours

            Expectations:  review financial statements and determine verifications.  Write a report indicating the status of the financial health of LWVGB and any suggestions for improvement

 


               Program Review LWVAL and LWVGB/SMcDonald & CArnwine

League Position reviews   Need 1 volunteer

Time:  3 hours during February

Expectations:  Review current programs and determine items to retain or in need of further study and suggest areas for study during the next year.

 
              Studies

National Popular Vote SMcDonald & 1 volunteer

Time:  10 hours

Expectation:  Prepare information and any local application for the LWV National Popular Vote Study, submit information for Voter, hold information session and concensus and submit response to LWV

 

Off Site Voting KKerchof & CArnwine

Time:  10 hours

Expectation:  Prepare information and any local application for the LWVAL Off-Site Voting Study, submit information for Voter, hold information session and concensus and submit response to LWVAL


 
               Minutes & Records/CBennett

Time:  2-4 hours/month

Expectation:  take minutes, send to Board, revise as determined at Board meetings and file for permanent file, send revised copies to Board and to J Johnson for posting on the web

Voter/KKerchof

Voter Production      1-2 volunteers

Time:  2-3 hours per month

Expectations:  write articles and help with layout of Voter

Observe government meetings    need 2-3 volunteers but can use more

Time:  varies based on the board, commission or council viewing.  Some are 1/month and others are more often

Expectations:            attend meetings, take notes for observation comments in Voter, make recommendation to Board for any letters needed or action.
