ALABAMA ELECTION RESOURCES

vote button jpgIf you have questions about the election on Tuesday, Nov. 4 or the voting process, look no further than the LWVGB website at http://www.lwvgb.org. Share this website with friends who need election answers and resources! If you don't find what you're looking for, call us at 205.583-5000, and we will help you! Remember to take ACCEPTABLE PHOTO VOTER ID (now required), vote only at the polling place where your name is on the polling list (otherwise it will not count), and if you are denied a conventional ballot, vote a provisional ballot. You will then have 3 days to fulfill the requirement that caused a conventional ballot to be denied.
And before you go to the polls, be sure to check out LWVAL's excellent unbiased analysis of the 5 constitutional amendments on all Alabama ballots statewide. Find out who supports and who opposes and why.

The League was active in encouraging citizens to vote and "Celebrating Democracy" on National Voter Registration Day. In addition to registering voters that day, we also called on citizens to make their voices heard at the ballot box with this press release, "The League of Women Voters of Greater Birmingham Challenges Citizens to Register to Vote On National Voter Registration Day 2014" written by Vice-President Ida Tyree-Hyche, Esq.., published on al.com on Sept. 17, 2014. President Yvonne Brakefield-Knowles was quoted, "Voting is at the core of our democracy and what it means to be an American... It is a key way for us to take control and have a say on what matters most to our families, our communities and us. "

League Speaks Out for the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014

Ida Tyree-Hyche speaks out at Moral Monday Montgomery Sep. 22, 2014On Monday, Sept, 22, LWVGB Vice-President Ida Tyree-Hyche, Esq. urged citizens to “Move forward on voting rights!” at the Moral Monday rally on the Alabama capitol steps in Montgomery. The crowd was in full agreement. Listen to the audio of her address  [other audio formats:  .m4a .ogg .wav] Other LWVGB members present in support were Nancy Ekberg, Connie Arnwine, Joan Burroughs, Catrena Norris Carter, and Ida's husband The Rev. Albert L. Hyche. See all the photos of the day. Thank you, Ida and all the other Birmingham League members who made the trip to Montgomery to stand against voter suppression!

Observer Corps Keeps Watch in Birmingham
eyes watching jpg
LWVGB member volunteers are watching public business affecting you. Ida Tyree-Hyche, Esq., Connie Arnwine, and Ann Smith are three of our dedicated observers. Thank you, ladies! There are many councils, commissions and boards in the Greater Birmingham area. If we can get more help, we can make regular reports to members and the public. It's an effective way to keep our officials accountable. If you can pitch in, contact Observer Corps Chair Ann Smith at anncsmith1@charter.net. Thank you!

Holiday Madness is about to begin.
Please don't forget the League!
  • Giving Tuesday - Giving Tuesday is Tuesday, Dec. 2. We encourage you to remember the League on this national day of giving to your favorite charity. You can give to the LWVAL Education Fund. Or you can give the LWVAL Education Fund and designate your donation for specific use in the Greater Birmingham area. Or beat the crowd and give today! :-) We're including the "giving links" here just for that purpose. Thank you in advance for your generosity! And please include #GivingTuesday in your tweets!
  • iGive.com - A holiday shopping reminder... You can give to the LWVAL Education Fund every time you shop online through iGive.com at no cost to you. Retailers (1500+ well known stores) donate a small percentage of your purchase to the charity of your choice (LWVAL-EF we hope!). These retailers "believe you'll be a great customer and you'll tell your friends. They like being good corporate citizens, helping to support YOUR favorite cause or charity. They even pay iGive, so when you see the amount or percentage being donated before you make a purchase, 100% of that is actually donated, period." So, please do your holiday online shopping through iGive.com and choose LWVAL Education Fund as your charity of choice! Thank you!

Coming in 2015...

Sunshine Week - March 15-21
Let's shine a light on government entities. How timely and accurate are they in reporting to the citizens. How complete is the information. Help us investigate. We need volunteers. You can work from home - a little or a lot. Contact LWVGB at admin@lwvgb.org. Or get in on the action now. Shine that light by participating in the Observer Corps with Ann Smith and company. See "Observer Corps Keeps Watch in Birmingham" above.
