Action Alert!
Please support HB 181 to advance Home Rule in Alabama!

As League members know, our League supports constitutional reform.  While most of us would prefer a whole new constitution through a constitutional convention, we may have to work for increments of reform.

Such an opportunity will arise this coming Wednesday, March 30th.  House Bill 181, sponsored by Representative Mike Hill, offers limited home rule to the counties.  It does not include the option of taxing authority and the counties will have to vote to accept or reject it.  But it will bring some uniformity to our county governance and will eliminate the case now where counties must beg the Legislature to approve almost everything they need to do for their constituents.  We currently have 854 constitutional amendments and are still counting! Get more information about HB 181 and the League's position and action in the LWVAL Legislative Report. (Scroll down that page and click on HB 181.)

Please join me at the Public Hearing for HB 181 at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30th in room 622 of the House before the County and Municipal Government (CMG) Committee headed by Rep. Steve McMillan.  As a member of ACCR Inc., I will testify in favor of the bill.

Even if you cannot come to Montgomery for the Public Hearing on Wednesday, please contact representatives on the House CMG Committee to voice your support for this positive step toward Home Rule, especially if your legislator is among its members.

Thank you for taking immediate action!
