LWVAL Convention Highlights - an Overview

League delegates and members learned about all things League at the 2007 LWVAL Convention. Yes, we took care of business. The League delegates approved the program, bylaws, and budget, and elected the officers and directors that will guide our state League for the next two years. In the 2007-09 biennium, LWVAL will be under the strong leadership of President Mary Lynn Bates, 1st Vice President Scarlett Gaddy, Secretary Yvonne Brakefield, Treasurer Ginnie Bennett, and Directors Judy Jones, Sarah McDonald, Anne Permaloff, Leonette Slay, Charlotte Ward, and Ruth L. Wright. The incoming Nominating Committee will assure that the League continues to have good leadership through the 2009-2011 biennium - Nancy Ekberg, chair, Jeanne Lacey, and Sandy Robinson (2 others to be chosen from the board.)

Convention is not just about the business conducted in  plenary sessions, though! We also...
  • Followed the life and times of League Lobbyist Sue Flood in Montgomery. Also, learned about our League education and advocacy efforts and the many ways in which they are having a visible, positive impact in the state's capitol.
  • Mined for League treasure on the Internet and entered the brave new world of blogging, communicating, and collaborating via the Internet. (Scarlett Gaddy and Jean Johnson)
  • Strolled the "Program Path" with Charlotte Ward who gave us a refresher course in the most fundamental of League processes. Our stepping stones? Unbiased issue research and study, League and public education, grassroots position-taking, and finally, vigorous advocy based on this strong foundation.
  • Learned from AL Arise Exec. Dir. Kimble Forrister about a bill in the AL legislature that would remove sales tax on food and from keynote speaker U.S. Congressman Artur Davis about the  comprehensive federal immigration bill. These bills are both important legislation that, if passed, would dramatically impact the lives of the most vulnerable in our state. (Kimble Forrister also received the League's 2007 Jane Katz Memorial Award "in recognition of outstanding service to the fundamental principles of freedom and democracy in their work with the Alabama Legislature to improve the lives of low-income Alabamians.")
  • Recognized the invaluable contributions of Anne Permaloff to the LWVAL. Anne received the 2007 Joyce Woodworth Award "In recognition of her contributions to League program over many years and her valuable guidance to the League of Women Voters of Alabama."
  • Were treated to wine and cheese and yummy lasagna and wonderful rum cake (secret's in the sauce) and so much more by the LWV of Greater Tuscaloosa. They hosted both a dinner and a reception where Leaguers had the opportunity to renew old friendships and make many new ones. We networked, exchanged ideas and told many a joke and story.  Thank you, LWVGT, for your very warm and friendly hospitality!

OK, let's not get carried away! Too late - but you get the idea. It was an informative, fun, and successful convention.

THANK YOU to our outgoing LWVAL Board (many of whom will continue in 2007-09!) President Sandy Robinson (2006-07), 1st Vice President Scarlett Gaddy, Secretary Yvonne Brakefield, Treasurer Virginia (Ginnie) Bennett, Directors Mary Lynn Bates, Barbara Caddell, Nancy Ekberg, Judy Jones (2006-07), Jeanne Lacey, Barbara Nichols, Charlotte Ward, and Ruth L. Wright. The League has raised visibility, contributed significantly to citizen education and become a stronger voice for change under your leadership.

THANK YOU to Sandy Robinson, Ginnie Bennett, Yvonne Brakefield, Sue Flood, Ruth Wright, Charlotte Ward, Scarlett Gaddy, and Jean Johnson of the state League, to Kathryn Byrd and husband Gene and all the members of the LWVGT, and to our speakers Kimble Forrister and U.S. Congressman Artur Davis for a most successful LWVAL convention!
