OTHER NEWS
- Attention
New Local Boards!
Now that you have had your 2008 Business Meeting, don't forget to let
the state League know who your new boad members are. Local
League
Presidents (or your assignee), please provide name, address, email
address, phone #, and office and/or portfolio position for each board
member. Please send this
list to Jean Johnson at jjohnson@lwval.org. (You may send portfolio assignments later if
you don't know them yet.) Thank you!
- Email addresses needed!
Local
League Presidents (or assignee), state League needs your latest and
greatest list of members with email addresses. We have a
current email list for East AL and Gr. B'ham members, but all others
are needed. Keeping
this list current is critical for timely communication with members. Please send this list to Jean
Johnson at jjohnson@lwval.org. Thanks!
- LWVAL
Dialogue
LWVAL's private blog is now online! Check it
out! Your username is your
first name initial + last name, all lower case (e.g. Jane Doe's
username is jdoe). If you don't know your password, follow the "Lost
your password?" link at bottom of the login window to reset your
password. If problems or questions, contact Jean Johnson (jjohnson@lwval.org
or 205 870-3063).
So what's your
opinion? Weigh in with your comments at the Dialogue.
- Let's Strengthen the
League's Advocacy Impact!
The 2009
General Session of the Alabama Legislature has begun. When the
legislature is in session, our grassroots action is very
important for an
effective LWVAL advocacy effort. When you speak to your
legislator as a constituent, s/he will listen.
Here's what you can do to help...
- Stay informed and stand ready to take action. Stay
informed about League issues before the Legislature by reading the LWVAL
Legislative Report. We follow bills
that are relavent to League positions and advocacy
priorities and keep you informed with weekly updates to Legislative
Report. (You can
also directly follow
these and other bills of interest at the Alabama Legislative Information System
Online, ALISON.)
- Take
immediate action when the call comes. The
LWVAL Advocacy Team will issue a "Call to Action" by email*
when we see
that a vote is about to take place in a bill's committee or by one of
the legislative bodies. Please
contact your legislator and/or legislative leaders when called upon.
Your voice, in your own name (not the League's) can be critical!
*
Do
you know a League member who does not have access to email? Be an
"action buddy" and let that member know about League "Calls to Action".
Thank you for making this extra effort!
- Inform the
Advocacy Team about your legislators. Sometimes
our advocacy efforts need to be focused on specific legislators. Please
answer this very brief member survey to let the Advocacy
Team know who
your legislators are.* With this knowledge, we
will know where our
strength lies (that's you!) throughout the state.
* If you're
not sure who your legislators are, find
them here.
- Let
friends know about the League, especially in non-League areas. Think
about the civic-minded people you know, especially anyone living in a
non-League area of
our state. S/he can join the League as a Member-at-Large (MAL). MALs
greatly increase the geographical base of our influence in the
legislature. Please contact these friends and let them know a little
about the
League. If they're interested in knowing more about the League and with
their permission,
please give their name and email address and/or phone number to LWVAL
Membership Chair Sarah McDonald (205-967-2829 or
smcdonald3357@charter.net).
Thank you for helping to broaden and stregthen our advocacy effort
across Alabama!
